Finally, we discussed surface area. 

The surface area of a polyhedron is the number of square units that covers all the faces of the polyhedron, without any gaps or overlaps.

For example:  Surface area of a rectangular prism

A rectangular prism with a length of 3, a width of 2, and a height of 6.
First, sketch the net.  A rectangular prism has six rectangular faces that come in pairs.
A rectangular prism net is shown. The top rectangle has side lengths that are labeled 2 and 3. The leftmost rectangle has side lengths that are labeled 6 and 2.
Find the area of each face.

Add the areas together.
